Sometimes gnats sneak in through the air holes in the bag to lay their eggs. The larvae feed on fungus that naturally grows on potting soil. 
The good news is they typically don't cause serious harm to your houseplants. 

Here's what you can do to send those gnats packing:

Let the soil dry out between waterings. Overwatering can make the problem worse.
Place yellow sticky traps near your plants. These are great for catching the adults.
Add at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil in your potted plants. The larvae can't burrow through the sand, so they'll meet their end. Just skip this step for seedlings or plants you're starting from seeds, as it could hinder their development.

Keep in mind, these little guys won't disappear overnight. It might take a few weeks to see a real difference, but stick with it, and you should start to see a reduction in their numbers. And remember, treat all the houseplants in your home to get the best results.
