What's the difference between axes and mauls?
Mauls and axes differ in weight, swing, and handle length and are used for different purposes. Mauls are usually six to eight pounds and have a fat, blunt, and heavy head for splitting, while axes are around three to four pounds, skinny, sharp, and light for chopping. Axes generally have a shorter handle and are useful for more than just cutting wood. Mauls have longer handles and are made to split thicker and heavier wood.
Can hatchets split and chop wood?
Hatchets are all-around tools that are convenient to bring on a camping trip. While mauls and axes are more effective at splitting and chopping wood, small hatchets are still able to do so but require more technique.
