What are the different types of rope?

The three most common types of rope are braided cotton, nylon, and polypropylene. Cotton ropes are made from natural fibers while nylon and propylene ropes are synthetic.

How do I know which type of rope to buy?

Consider what you'll be using the rope for. Polypropylene rope is lightweight, water-resistant, and floats on water, making it great for tying and securing personal watercraft and other marine uses. Cotton rope and cord are great for multiple uses indoors or outside. Nylon rope and paracord is lightweight, flexible, resistant to many chemicals, and very durable, which makes it an excellent choice for heavy outdoor use.

How much rope should I buy?

It's never a bad idea to get more rope than you think you'll need, whether for home use or when you're heading outdoors. If a cord breaks, or you find you need more rope, you'll be happy you have a second length to work with.

What is the strongest type of rope?

The more strands a rope has, the stronger it will be. In terms of materials, nylon tends to make for the strongest and most durable rope.
