Toilet Fill Valves and Ballcocks
...
What is a ballcock?
A ballcock is a type of fill valve that uses a float on a metal arm to make sure a toilet doesn't overflow when refilling. The floating ball is attached by an arm to the valve and turns it off when it floats to a certain height.
What's the difference between a ballcock and a fill valve?
A ballcock is simply a fill valve with the float and arm attached. Some modern fill valves do not use a ballcock and are more efficient, and smaller.
Do all fill valves fit all toilets?
Fill valves have a universal size that fits all modern toilets, and fill valves with adjustable heights can fit toilet cisterns of different sizes.
What do I need to replace a fill valve?
Fill valves can be removed, screwed in, and adjusted by hand and don't require any tools for installation. You will know it’s time to replace a fill valve if your toilet keeps refilling and overflowing or if it fails to refill after being flushed.
