1. Warm mist humidifiers
These work by boiling the water they release, making the air heathier to breathe. During colder weather a warm-mist humidifier will not only add moisture to the air but can also help to make rooms feel warmer. However, please note that these are not designed to act as heaters. With some units, you can also add medicinal inhalants or aroma therapy essential oils to infuse the air with a soothing vapor, but please be sure to follow the instructions included with your unit.
2. Ultrasonic humidifiers
An ultrasonic humidifier uses high-frequency sound vibrations to produce an extra-fine water mist that is then expelled to add moisture to the room. These units tend to be smaller, quieter and generally do not require humidifier filters. But because they do not boil water to produce a mist, it is important to disinfect these units regularly.
3. Cool mist humidifiers
A cool mist humidifier works either by using a fan to evaporate water that's been pulled up into a wick or by using ultrasonic vibration to break water into small particles and disperse them into the air. Either way, they produce a cool vapor that raises a room's humidity but not its temperature.
4. Evaporative humidifiers
An evaporative humidifier uses a simple fan to speed up the natural process of water evaporating from a wick. Because they do not generate heat, they are ideal for homes with children and pets.
