What are the different types of safety gear?
The different types of safety gear protect different parts of your body from different hazards, and include:
Work gloves - these protect your hands from hazards like sharp edges, pinching, and abrasion.
Work boots - steel reinforcement ensures that work boots and safety shoes protect your toes and feet from falling tools and prevent injury when kicking stubborn material.
Breathing protection - filter air when you breathe to keep dangerous dust and other irritants out of your lungs.
Eye protection - typically made of clear, durable plastic, eye protection lets you see what you're doing and prevents flying debris and liquids from reaching your eyes.
Hard hats - made of rigid yet lightweight plastic, hard hats protect your head from falling debris.
Hearing protection - working in loud environments can cause hearing loss, hearing protection muffles incoming sound to reduce strain on your eardrums.
Knee pads - a hard exterior with internal padding keeps your knees comfortable and protected when gardening or doing work that requires lots of kneeling.
Welding helmets - the bright flashes of arc welding generate bursts of strong UV and infrared light, which welding helmets are designed to negate so you can keep an eye on your work.
How do I know when my safety gear needs to be replaced?
Eye protection and hard hats should be replaced if they are cracked in any way. Disposable dust masks and respirators should be replaced after roughly 8 hours of use. Follow manufacturer instructions to find out when to replace respirator canisters in non-disposable models. Earplugs should be replaced whenever they become dirty. Earmuffs tend to last a long time, and only need replacement or repair when certain parts fail.
