How many bags of mulch do I need?

One standard bag of hardwood mulch typically covers around 15 – 25 square feet when applied 2 – 4 inches deep. To calculate how many bags you need, first measure the area you want to mulch and divide by 15 – 25. Be sure to purchase a bit extra in case of spillage or imperfect coverage.

What are the different types of mulch?

Some common types of yard mulch include hardwood, pine bark, cypress and rubber mulch. Hardwood mulch is versatile and affordable, breaking down slowly over time. Pine bark provides vibrant colour but breaks down more quickly. Cypress mulch has a nice cedar scent and rubber is a great option for landscaping mulch.

What colour mulch would look the best in my yard?

For most residential yards, brown or black mulches tend to look best as they blend in naturally. However, feel free to get creative with colour if you have garden beds or a landscaping theme in mind.

Do I need landscape fabric under my mulch?

When applying garden mulch, it's a good idea to start with a layer of landscape fabric underneath first to prevent weeds from sprouting up. Just be sure the fabric has holes to allow for water drainage.
