Very easy to assemble (but even easier if you have a socket set).
On nhe one I got the table top has a nice smooth finish over most of it, but over soy is a little rougher; not a big deal but that's why I'm only giving it four stars.

Q: Is it possible to mount the cross member on the short bars in the center so you can use this as a bar table and people can put their feet on them which would then run down the center of the bench instead of at the back? I can't tell from the pictures.

A: No, this is not an option. The cross member mounts directly to the back legs and uses pre-drilled holes. The brackets and length of the cross-member do not allow it to be placed in the center. I believe this is so you can store cabinets under the bench. Your idea for using the bench as a bar table sounds great! I would create a foot-rest by sanding a 2x4 or 2x6 smooth, router the edges, and finish the wood to match the top of the bench. Drill a hole through the cross members on each end and secure with a bolt/nut/washers.

A: The wood top is sealed with clear lacquer, but to use in the kitchen, it would be better to seal again.
