    Helping our garden grow

The heating pad really helped our seeds germinate faster. Love starting our seeds indoors and these will help for the next several years.

Heating pad good, peat pellets meh...

I bought this when it was on sale for pretty good discount. The peat pellets don't work as well as soil in a starter tray with cells. The heating pad sped up germination though so I guess the heating pad made this worth the price. The tray and cover are a standard size so I can use them with other types of starter trays. Some people have had success with the peat pellets. They worked well for squash seeds in my experience but made other seedlings leggy.

    Questions

    1 - 5 of 5 Questions

Q: Jiffy heated seedlings mat The heat mat does it keep the seed at the right temp? or does it cook the seeds and make them to hot?

    2 Answers

A: It depends on the seed. Dill needs cool to germinate but peppers like it hot. Expect 35 degrees according to my thermometer. Look at the seed packet for recommended germination temperature.

Q: Is the heating mat flexible or rigid, and is it waterproof? How much power does it consume?

    1 Answer

A: The heat mat uses 17.5 watts. It is flexible but not something you would want to fold in half as it does contain wires. It is waterproof, however it should not be submerged as it needs to be plugged in.

Q: After the seeds have germinated, do I remove the seed or plant the whole pod? I just started sowing yesterday. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to move the whole pod to a container after germination or just the seed. The instructions don't mention anything.

    1 Answer

A: The whole pellet/pod would be transferred into a pot. The pellet/pod itself is biodegradable.
