If you plan to hit the streets for a game of hockey, we’ve got all the gear you need to make it a good one.
What is street hockey?
Street hockey is a sport that is influenced by ice hockey. It is played with either a ball or puck that is designed for flat, dry surfaces. The rules are very similar to ice hockey, except the players wear minimal hockey equipment and have limited physical contact.
What do you need for street hockey?
As this version of hockey requires very little equipment to play, it makes it easy for kids and adults to play anywhere. The equipment you’ll need includes a ball or puck, 2 goal nets, and a street hockey stick made for play on rough outdoor surfaces. Optionally, players can wear eye protection, gloves, shin guards, mouth guards, and other protective gear. Balls are often tailored for the outdoors, with balls suited for warm weather and cold weather.
What is the difference between street hockey and ice hockey?
Street hockey and ice hockey have a range of differences, from the stick and amount of equipment used to the surfaces played on. On the other hand, the rules are often quite similar as street hockey derives rules from ice hockey. The equipment and gear used are designed to be lighter and more flexible while pads are more lightweight and durable.
What is the difference between street and ice hockey sticks?
Street and ice hockey sticks differ in material. This is so you don’t risk cracking composite or wood blades on the street. Street hockey sticks are often made with tough ABS plastic blades but can have wood or composite shafts, while ice hockey sticks are made with composite or wood.
Can I use ice hockey gear to play street hockey?
Ice hockey protective gear is not suitable to play street hockey in because the equipment is too bulky. However, you can use the same helmet, elbow pads, gloves, cup, and mouthguard to keep yourself safe. You’ll also want to purchase a proper puck or ball to play on hard surfaces, as well as a proper street hockey stick.
