What should I look for when buying bike tires and tubes?

When buying new tires and tubes for your bicycle, the most important factor to consider is size. To find the correct dimensions of your tire, first look to the numbers printed on the tire’s sidewall. These numbers indicate your tire size in two different measurements: the outer tire diameter, and the tire width. While standard sizes vary, as different styles of bikes carry different tires, here are some of the more common sizes:

• Mountain bikes: 26”-29” diameter, 2”-5” width

• BMX bikes: 20” diameter, 1.5”-2.5” width

• Road bikes: 700mm diameter, 23mm-40mm width

• Kids’ bikes: 16”-22” diameter, 1.5”-3” width

How do I know what size bike tire tube I need?

The best way to find the size of your tire’s inner tube is to refer to the printed numbers on the outer sidewall of your tire. Look for a number like ‘26 x 1.95’, which is a common measurement for mountain bike tires. With these numbers, you can choose your new tube accordingly.

What kind of valve is on my bike tire?

There are two common valve types found on most bike tires in North America: Schrader valves and Presta valves. With a threaded outer wall and a spring-loaded check valve in the center, Schrader-style valves are the most common valve stem found on tires, and are often found on mountain bikes, city bikes and hybrid bikes. The Schrader valve also allows air to flow in one direction only, meaning the inner pin must be pressed down for inflation. On the other hand, Presta valves are most often found on higher-end bikes and consist of additional parts, including a valve core, a valve lockring, and a locknut. The main differentiator is that Presta valves are designed specifically for bicycle use, while Schrader valves are more universal.

Can I use a smaller tube in my bike tire?

Technically yes, but only under certain circumstances. While you should always try your best to match your tube size to the correct tire size, it is possible to use a smaller tube than your tire. Generally, an inner tube that is 10 millimeters or narrower than your tire will still work, so long as it also matches the diameter of your rims.
