What is the best type of bike for a kid to ride around the neighborhood?

For young children first learning to ride a bike, one of the best and safest options for casual neighborhood riding are balance bikes. These two-wheeled transition bikes resemble standard bicycles, but without the pedals. Balance bikes are a safe and effective option for a child to learn balance, momentum, steering and braking before graduating to a model with pedals.
