Shellac based primer

This product is expensive, but if you want to block tanins and other stains or odours, it works well. It is my go-to primer when painting wood furniture.

Gold Standard

It's expensive, but this is the gold standard for shellac primer. I was painting IKEA PAX wardrobes and used this. Putting the pieces back together, they got banged around A LOT and nothing chipped. I was impressed! I ran out for the last couple drawers and bought the SW product on sale. Huge mistake, any bump resulted in chips all over. Had to sand everything down and redo with Zinsser B.I.N. for a lasting, durable finish. This is the product you want for 1 and done. I also previously used this to prime the tiles around my fireplace that I painted to match the walls. 2 yrs later, no chips, even where the vacuum scrapes along the bottom tiles. I use mini foam rollers for application and I line the tray with tin foil because this product is NOT water soluble, so this makes cleaning up a breeze. You can store your roller in a Ziploc bag in the fridge between applications, then toss it when you're done. Make sure before you start you stir well with a stick to get all the particles settled at the bottom to mix in.

Q: I have a ceiling that has soot from my wood stove, will this product cover the soot without having to clean the ceiling first and will it do it in one coat?

  • A: You must clean the ceiling first or nothing will stick to it . The Zinzzer will block any stains that are left after it is cleaned . I would give it a light sanding with medium grit sand paper also , for better adhesion .
