Here's some helpful information to keep in mind. Keeping those new seedlings wet is just as important as watering before they even sprout. We recommend watering them 1-2 times per day until they're established. Once your seedlings are settled in, you can cut back to watering about 1-2 times per week, as needed. Also, make sure the ground is broken up. If the soil isn't disturbed, your seeds won't be able to grow. Scotts

Not What Expected

It was east to apply but results haven't been what I expected. I followed the directions for watering as I note that is the key to success. So far, not super happy with this product.

Don't be lazy, make your own mix

Typical 'shrinkflation' covers a very small area, has yet to germinate after 10 days, doesn't look as though there is much seed in the mix, mostly powdery mulch. Better off buying a bag of seed and soil/sand mix and make your own.

Here's some helpful information to keep in mind.

Different grass types take different amounts of time to sprout. Bluegrass takes 14-21 days (can sometimes take up to 28 days), Fine Fescue and Tall Fescue take 10-14 days, and Perennial Ryegrass takes 7-10 days. For cool-season grasses (Bluegrass, Rye, and Fescue), the soil needs to be at least 12.8°C (55°F) to germinate. If you're in Canada, you'll want daytime temps consistently above 18.3°C (65°F). Keep in mind that consistent warmth is key, cool nights and fluctuating temperatures can slow things down, cold weather will delay germination but won't hurt the seeds, and too much or too little water can both mess with germination. In Canada daytime temperatures need to consistently be above 18.3°C (65°F). In the spring it takes a lot of consistent warm temperatures to warm up the soil. Cool night time temperatures and fluctuating temperatures will slow germination. Cold weather will delay germination, but will not hurt the seed. Both excessive moisture and not enough moisture can inhibit seed germination.

We are sorry to read about your experience with Scotts EZ Seed Patch & Repair and appreciate your feedback.

You can expect to see those first sprouts in about 5-10 days under ideal conditions. Keep in mind, that's just when the first blades start to appear – not when all the seeds will have germinated. Different grass types have different timelines. The germination time listed on the package is based on the variety that sprouts the quickest. Here's a quick rundown:

Kentucky Bluegrass: 7-14 days (potentially up to 21 days)
Perennial Ryegrass: 5-10 days
Fine Fescue: 7-10 days

If there is anything we can do to help you have a 5-star experience, please contact our Consumer Services team at 866-436-7645 for assistance. Scotts

Questions

1 - 8 of 8 Questions

Q: Can this product be used at this time of year or is it just an early spring thing

6 Answers
  • A: I used it at the end of June and made sure to water it every day for the first two weeks. And it's at a spot that is under the sun all day. I typically watered it in the evening with a good soaking and that's it. Grew real thick.

Q: Do I need to put soil or fertilizer over this product or just sprinkle and water? If so what type of soil/fertilizer should I use?

2 Answers
  • A: I would sprinkle a thin layer of soil (potting soil) over it so that the birds don't eat the seeds and it would keep the whole thing moist for a longer time.

Q: Would this be good for yellow grass areas? The green grass areas looks ok except for crabgrass areas and Creeping Charlie.

1 Answer
  • A: Scotts EZ Seed Patch & Repair is great to fill in areas of your lawn that are struggling. Be sure to remove any old, dying grass in those spots and then for best results follow the label directions for preparing the area and applying to product. Keep in mind if you do not know why your lawn is getting yellow patches, you may want to get it diagnosed before applying any new grass seed in case it is a disease or insect issue.

Q: Do I only have to seed once a year?

1 Answer
  • A: you only need to seed when your grass is thin. if you have too many seeds in one area they will fight for nutrition. as long as the lawn is thick it will choke out the weeds that try to grow.
