Basic / Economical Hanging Oven Thermometer

My wife had recently baked a cake that was not fully baked after she took it out of the oven at the desired time. We purchased this thermometer to check if the digital temperature on our oven matched this analog model. The readings were 15 degrees in difference; but now we aren't certain if this thermometer was properly calibrated. We have placed a service call to a technician for a full diagnostic test of the oven.

Q: How do you know it is accurate?

A: I bought this oven thermometer and another brand to compare to a third I already had. Placed closely together in a hot oven, they all eventually read the same temperature given enough time, but my original one responds the fastest. They're all dial thermometers for oven use like this one. Not a whole lot one can do as a consumer to check that the manufacturer has accurately calibrated an oven thermometer.
