OEMTOOLS® Spark Plug Thread Repair Reamer Kit, 5-pc, M14-1.25, 44647

I used this to repair the spark plug hole on my Yamaha SR 500. I was really impressed with how well the reamer worked, it cut really clean with very minimal effort. I didn’t want to remove the head so I greased up the tap real good, then removed it to clean off the captured chips after every 1-2 full turns. This worked really well in conjunction with lots of vacuuming with a shop vac. I set the steel insert in place using high temp RTV gasket silicone as recommended by OEM. It doesn’t mention this in the item description so be sure to buy a tube of that. I’m very happy with how this repair worked out, I definitely recommend this product.

Worked very well for my Old Craftsman snowblower. No drilling , need to add high temperature sealant when using this kit.

I was very happy to find this in stock.Unfortunately the instructions are terrible. (Not just unhelpful, but misleading and inappropriate. Anyway.) First off, the tool is too large to fit into a Honda Accord engine, so I had to modify the tool to use it. 3/4" socket will not go into a Honda head. Max size is 5/8" socket, so you need to grind down the hex flats. (other tools use 3/8" square drive which is much better.) After this mod, the thread cutting works well with lots of grease. Next, when you install the thread insert, RTV silicone (as recommended) did not work. (I ruined one thread insert during this attempt, and had to go and buy more, since only one of each size was included.) Loctite Red worked to hold the insert in place. Finally, to permanently expand and lock the insert, the punch tool will not reach and there's no way to extend it, so you must get creative to hold in place while you hammer it. (again, a 3/8" square drive would be much better here.) And then you need a magnet to remove it from the head. In the end, it worked and I was happy to get my engine running again. If you are a MacGyver, you can succeed with this kit.
