    Love it!!

Quality fixed blade knife that I use for work purposes, I work remotely and having a large knife for tactical/work purpose is great. The magnesium is a nice addition but not used yet. I've used this knife for many applications at work and love the belt placement. Quality leather. 10/10 recommend.

    AMAZING FIR THE PRICE!!

Like the title says, this knife is amazing for the price. the low reviewers are people that; don't know about knives Don't know about THIS knife properly. Firstly, this is a Canadian Tire brand knife. it's not a big production and big name you're going to pay a big price for. But the price, even not in sale is pretty good. the knife itself; 1045 high carbon steel. not as good as 1075 because it means you will be sharpening it more often. the nice part is it will be easy to sharpen. So, for the price, a great knife. Out of the packaging, the sharpness is ok but a little uneven from top to handle. Getting it sharpened won't be a bad idea. the style is a bit like a butchers knife with a nice wide head. The blade itself is hand finished so, kind of like snowflakes, no 2 are exactly the same. the overall appearance of the knife will be the same but there may be small to large differences from the pictures example or a friend's. The blade is VERY thick which, in combination to its full tang length, gives it a great weight for the size...maybe even a little lighter than you may anticipate but a good working weight and in your hand weight. The handle is a basic wooden handle keeping a very clean appearance. so..for the price...really a good value for a knife that will be a good multipurpose camping or camping and hunting knife for all kinds of jobs. The Ferro/fire steel that comes with is kinda small but will do the job and fits into its pocket on the sheath nice and tight. the sheath itself is a well made full leather sheath.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: what type of steel is it made of?

    3 Answers

A: Do not listen some Youtube videos. Some youtubers have definitively too much imagination. This would not happen if the steel grade was on the product package. The steel is not 1045, or 1095, or 440C. Canadian Tire says that the Huntshield NORTHERN and WESTERN Heritage Forged AP Knives blade material is 420ss. Period. All that is needed to make basic steel is a combination of iron and carbon. However, over time it was found that adding different elements to this basic steel substance can increase its toughness or hardness. These added elements account for what is the major difference of most types of steel in blades. There are advantages and disadvantages to each added element. For example, a certain alloy might make a blade harder. The more hard the steel, the longer it will hold its edge (and that means less frequent sharpening), which is great! However, if you harden the blade, you also make the blade less tough, which means the blade is less resistant to shock and impact (not such a good thing). Unfortunately, a blade cannot be both harder, and tougher; as you add toughness, you make the blade less hard and vice versa. Stainless steel refers to a class of iron alloys that are built to be corrosion resistant for a particular environment. They can contain a range of metals including nickel, molybdenum, and titanium. Stainless steels have been categorized by the Society of Automotive Engineers based on their compositions. These categories are known as the SAE steel grades and for stainless steel each category is referenced by three numbers. 420 and 440 stainless steel are both iron-chromium alloys, but they have slightly different mechanical and electrical properties making them suited to different applications. 420 stainless steel is a martensitic higher carbon version of types 410 and 416 stainless that can be hardened by heat treatment. It contains a minimum of 12 percent chromium, sufficient to give 420 corrosion resistance properties. 420 has more carbon than 410, but less than 440. As such it is softer than 440, but has a higher toughness. The low carbon content means that this steel is very soft, and doesn't hold an edge well. It is low quality, low cost material. Many cheap knives tend to be made of this material because of its cost. If you do some checking you will most likely find that one the real reason some outfits use 420 steel in their knives is less wear and tear on thier grinders. This being the case it cost them less to produce thier knives. Anyone who has ground knives knows the wear and tear on belts and equipment due to hard vs soft material. Blades made from this material need to be sharpened frequently, and often chip. On the bright side, all 420 stainless steel is extremely rust resistant. This means that one of the best uses for this material is to make diving knives because of their constant contact with saltwater. Sometimes, you will also see 420J. 420J is the lowest quality 420 steel, but is also the most rust resistant, perfect for diving knives. In the sother hand we should not forget that 420 is the steel of choice for a lot of machetes. It is the same steel that Condor K&T from Salvador uses for their stainless machetes. Some of their survival knives are also made from English 420 HC (High Carbon) surgical quality Stainless Steel heat treated and annealed to about 50-55 HRC, and they are quite good. So? 420 stainless..... is it a bad steel? While in theory 420 series steel can be made quite good, a good portion of the knives made with it do not get the best heat treatment. Any steel can be bad if not heat treated properly so it depends on what you're buying. From time to time we need to remind ourselves that there are qualities to knife blades other than edge retention. Blades made from softer steels like 420 are always more corrosion resistant and always easier to sharpen. Most of the time they are also tougher. Personally, I'd rather have camp knife made from 420 than from 154CM hardened to RC59. So it depends on the application. Steels aren't superior or inferior to one another. They are different with different strengths and weaknesses. Regards.
