One of the features I like most about this container is the ease of getting the lid on and off. Plus it's roomy, and stacks like a charm with little fear of the stack tipping over when you walk by.
I use it for "cloth things" storage, mostly. You know, sweaters, winter coats, yarn, clothes you KNOW you'll be able to get into "next" year.

Q: Does it withstand cold? Since I need to store things in an unheated area and it gets extremely cold here (-50 or worse in winter) I wanted to know if the Homz DuraBILT tote is cold-resistant or will the plastic get brittle at such temperatures?

A: Item # 8540BKRD.04 (CTC #142-6049) is an LLDPE tote which does withstand cold weather and other extreme elements. (LLDPE = linear low density polyethylene) LLDPE has higher tensile strength and higher impact and puncture resistance. It is very flexible and elongates under stress and has better environmental stress cracking resistance. 8540BKRD.04 (CTC #142-6049) is also a Durabilt item which includes a lifetime durability warranty.

Q: Will this hold water for a long time? I want to use it to make a pond filter. Is it strong enough to stand alone? I'm thinking I might need to build a box to surround it and keep it structurally strong.

A: This product is not intended or peformance tested for use as a replacement for a plastic water trough or stock tank. The container will hold some amount of water, but it would likely not be as rigid or perform the same as a product specifically designed for holding large amounts of water over time.

Q: Does Canadian Tire sell a truly airtight storage tote, i.e. one with a rubber seal? The Homz DuraBILT does not have an airtight seal.

A: No this product is not an airtight storage tote. At this time Canadian Tire does not carry a tote with a seal

Q: Keeps water out? does the lid on this tote fit tight enough that it could store sporting equipment outdoors? Need a big bin for some hockey gear on a balcony.

A: The Homz DuraBilt line of totes does protect its contents quite securely with the built in latches but we cannot guarantee it will keep all water and moisture from entering the tote as it is not an air tight seal.
