Please read before u say user error or application error. I am in my 60's and I have refinished more than a few decks in my life.
Stripped, sanded, applied conditioner. Then applied stain with roller on large surfaces and brush for trim work.
The deck was refinished in summer of 2024. One winter and the stain is peeling off like cheap tape. Funny enough I left few bits of masking tape and they survived all winter. Can't say same for the stain.
You can peel off the stain in long strips. Some have even dissolved in the snow slush and pooled into stain blobs that I have to clean with paper towel.
The moral of the story is not about money. It's the time and effort wasted and now I have to repeat the whole process again.
If you enjoy dirty monotonous work and throwing your money in the trash. Then please buy this stain. You can relive the experience year after year.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Solid Stain. The Thompson's products are penetrants, and should not peel or flake off. If the product is peeling, the surface was not porous enough to accept the stain. We generally recommend doing a "splash test" prior to application to ensure the surface will accept our product. At this point you can either sand the surface or use a power washer in conjunction with a chemical stripper to remove all peeling or flaking areas. Before you apply any more product, I would first test your surface by performing a "splash test." This is done by splashing some water on the surface. The water will do one of two things: *Absorb into the surface making it slightly darker. This is a sign that another coat of product will effectively absorb into the surface and you can apply our product successfully. *Water will puddle or just run off. This means that the surface is already sealed and our products will just form an oily, tacky layer on top. We would not recommend applying our products at this time. As long as the water test shows that the surface is absorbent, then you can proceed to perform a test area. This is important for two reasons -- it will help you learn how much product to apply before the surface is saturated and also show you what degree of discoloration will occur. As you will notice, once the surface has absorbed a certain amount of our product, then the remaining waterproofer just sits on the surface and can lead to oiliness, blotchiness, or discoloration. For this reason we recommend test areas to determine the porosity of the substrate and how much product you can apply in any given area. Great Product IMO

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I sealed some decking this summer and I’m happy about the outcome. It snowed here yesterday and the decking is doing well.
It appears that this brand is the best I have used. I have had some that been completely useless and have not sealed as they should have.
I am happy with this product.

Easy to work with just like water.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I wanted to seal me cedar skirts on my back porch so that they doesn't look old and retain the fresh wood look of the cedar. Thompson clear sealer did just that. It easy to apply with damp brisels and brush it on the wood, for faster coverage I used a foam roller to roll but not put in much pressure because it will squeeze all the sealing agent. Work slowly and apply just the right amount of pressure to get an even coat. 1 container I was able to make 2 coat on my deck skirt that's 12 by 26 ft by 6 ft high. Very happy with the product.
