Water float valve fitting should be designed to fit the hole when passing the hole of the housing. In other word, the threads on the brass fitting should be cut off and make into flat surface on both sides.

Works well

This unit seems to be working really well. The great thing about it is the overflow pan and drainage to prevent potential flooding. Our last humidifier overflowed and caused a lot of damage to our basement floor.

Performs as expected

With a mix of reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. In my case, I was satisfied with the unit itself. It has done a great job to elevate the humidity in my house and we have been able to level it off to maintain a reasonable 30-35% RH. I have a bigger home (3,000SF) with a lot of exposed wood surfaces that had been starting to creak and squeak with a long run of frigid temperatures. The humidity was down around 20% when I decided I needed to do something. The installation instructions are daunting to say the least. If you have a little know-how, it won't be a challenge, but I needed a few extra pieces that I recommend (1/8" shrink tube for the thermostat-to-motor connections is ideal, and aluminized ducting tape is a must for the round-duct connections). It would also be nice if the instructions provided a complete sketch of the finished product so you could work towards something. There are a lot of words that can cause confusion (especially since this is reversible to suit different installation requirements). The humidistat is not accurate (but that's to be expected). I have a couple smart-home devices that I use to check the humidity in the home, and then adjust the humidistat settings to suit. So far, no issues with overflowing or wasted water, and I don't see how it could, as long as you maintain the float valve and ensure the unit is level when installed.

You get what you pay for

I bought this, fully knowing that some work would likely be required, based on other reviews. Installation went fairly well but when I installed the foam drum, I noticed that I had been sent 2 fully enclosed ends and that the air source pipe was a good 1.5 to 2 inches from the drum. I drilled big holes in the one end and 3D printed a cover to ensure most of the air would get into the center of the drum. A week or so after getting it working, I found the bottom water tray just decided to come loose and there was a good puddle of water under the unit. I highly recommend putting a band of tape around the box closest to the return duct to help prevent this from happening. After quite a bit of the expected extra effort was put in to getting this going, it's actually doing a pretty good job of keeping the humidity level at a much more comfortable level in the house (around 40% where as before it was in the 20 to 30% range).

Q: I installed this humidifier 3 days ago but there seems to be a problem with the motor. When the humidistat calls for humidity the drum starts to turn but only for a few revolutions, then it stalls. Is there a known problem with the motors?

  • A: I contacted Desert Spring about this and they immediately shipped a new motor. Dehumidifier works perfectly now. The Desert Spring customer service was excellent.

Q: How does this (Desert Spring Drum humidifier) differ from the Desert Spring Rotary humidifier? Was using Desert Spring rotary disc humidifier. Motor has given way (again) due to bad quality tap water clogging and damaging it. This model seems cheaper. Would I be able to replace the broken one using its existing openings?

1 Answer
  • A: The products are quite different in terms of the evaporative media. The Rotary Disc unit uses a durable plastic cleanable media with a 10-year limited warranty. The Drum unit uses a disposable foam media which should be replaced once or twice per season depending on the amount of scale in the water. The contact surface area of the rotary disc wheel is also greater, which means the Disc unit produces more humidity and works much better at lower room air temperatures. The hole for the by-pass duct is the same, the cut-out for the drum unit is slightly larger.

Q: The specs say 4000h run time. Does this mean the motor will last only 4000 hours?
