How to sharpen and hone a knife

Dull knives make everything harder in the kitchen, which turns cooking into a burden.

How to Sharpen and Hone a Knife How to Sharpen and Hone a Knife

10 MINS | EASY | 3 STEPS

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

STEP 1

Use a honing rod

Between uses, a honing rod will realign the blades. Start by holding the rod verticle, anchoring it on the cutting board. Then, grip your knife facing down at a slight angle – about 15 degrees.

STEP 2

Sweep back to front

Starting with the heel of the knife touching the rod –sweep the knife back finishing with the tip. Apply only as much pressure as the weight of the knife when drawing it across the rod. Repeat the process on the other side.

STEP 3

If you find your knife is still dull, that’s an indicator that you need to use a sharpener.

Insert the heel of the knife into the sharpener and gently pull backwards. Repeat as necessary.
