What is pool chlorine used for?

Pool chlorine is used to disinfect, sanitize, and maintain water quality in swimming pools. Chlorine kills harmful microorganisms, control algae growth, and maintain proper pH balance to create a hygienic swimming environment.

How much chlorine to put in my pool (by the gallon)?

The amount of chlorine needed depends on the size of the pool, current chlorine levels, and bather load. However, a general guideline for regular chlorination is to maintain a chlorine level of 1-3 parts per million in the pool water.

To calculate the amount of chlorine to add to your pool by the gallon, you’ll need to know the total gallons of water in your pool and use this formula:

Chlorine needed (in ounces)= Pool gallons x Desired chlorine level/ Chlorine concentration

Keep in mind that these calculations only provide a general ideal and it’s essential to regularly test and adjust chlorine levels to maintain water safety and quality.

Is there a difference between chlorine tablets, pucks, and liquid?

Chlorine tablets, pucks, and liquid are all forms of pool disinfectants. Chlorine tablets are slow-dissolving and gradually release chlorine to maintain consistent levels of sanitation. Chlorine pucks contain both chlorine for disinfection and a stabilizer to prevent chlorine degradation from sunlight, making them suitable for outdoor pools. Liquid chlorine, on the other hand, is added directly to the pool to provide a rapid increase in chlorine levels. While tablets and pucks offer convenience due to their slow dissolution, liquid chlorine provides more immediate impact and is often used for shock treatments.
