Last of tents with zippable mesh, but not great

As a SAR volunteer who goes camping nearly every weekend in all weather conditions, I'm intimately familiar with the foibles of choosing a good tent, so let's get cracking: Suitability for Winter Unfortunately, since the departure of Eureka, the tent market in Canada has given up on tents where meshing can be zipped up completely -- except this tent.  This is essential for very cold days when your body heat will create a chimney effect causing much more ventilation than needed through the fly.  Don't worry though, the tent itself is breathable, you can't asphyxiate yourself by zipping up. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for being one of the only ones left. Vestibule There has been a change in the vestibule setup versus the pictures shown -- one that I like a lot.  The vestibule comes straight out then the door is flat away from the tent.  This means you can actually have the door open during light rains and it won't get anywhere near the tent. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's a generous size, though needs it's own pole.  Not as pictured. Setup Here's where things start to stumble.  They made the poles needlessly complex by having two poles pre-joined in the middle.  This only makes it more complex to set up and, if a pole goes wrong, would make it very difficult to fix.  They colour-coded the poles but they screwed up.  You've got 4 poles total, two pre-joined which are mainly blue but two of the four ends are grey.  The grey ends go into the grey webbing.  The blue ends go into the black webbing.  There is another mainly blue pole with Orange ends which goes into the Orange webbing.  Finally, there's a completely grey pole (for the vestibule) which goes into -- you guessed it -- the black webbing.  Not the grey webbing.  Boy oh boy you're going to confuse and frustrate a LOT of casual tenters with that. ⭐ It takes a LONG time to set up, and is needlessly confusing Layout I've always preferred square tents and find dome-ish style tents needlessly wasteful of space.  This applies here, but again to point 1, beggars can't be choosers.  Pockets are not as pictured (long and across both full walls), now it's just a corner. Note, as is the norm nowadays, they're pressed up against the tent which means their contents will be exposed to consendsation/ice on very cold days. ⭐⭐⭐ Pockets smaller than pictured, dome wastes space Build Quality Perhaps unsurprising for the price, the build quality isn't great.  The floor is thin, as is the fly.  The poles are VERY thin and I worry about their ability to hold heavy snow.  The zippers are not much better than you would find on a pair of pants, which means they slide excellently the first few days but when some dirt or snow gets in them will not work well at all. ⭐⭐I expect I'll get maybe two years out of this.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Missing parts..

I would love to say this was a great tent.. however the one I received looked like it had been previously opened. Thankfully I got it well in advance as it was missing 12 of the 19 pegs it was supposed to come with, and the ones it came with didn’t even look like the right ones! It was returned. I ended up going with the North Face Stormbreak3.

Great features and versatility for the price

This is a pretty great tent for the price. I would say it is truly a 4 season tent. I've used it twice now in the fall and we were very warm at night while temperatures were between 4°C-10°C. The vestibule is always a feature I look for in a tent, perfect for your storing your boots and packs at night. There are lots of ventilation options so the tent goes from fully enclosed to 75% mesh with just a few unzips. Really easy to set up and seems like it will last a while. I recommend!

Q: My carry bag for this tent blew away on the weekend. How can I replace it?

2 Answers
  • A: Just buy a new bag to out it in.  Lol.    I don’t really like how sloppy loose the original bag is anyways!   I would straight up replace it if it was in the budget.

Q: would you recommend this tent for backcountry camping, light enough and compact for a backpack ?

2 Answers
  • A: No, this tent is about 12 lbs and not very compact. If you are splitting the tent up across more than one person it could be managable. I have it for kayak/canoe camping (and car accessible winter camping in the snow) where gear weight isn't as big a concern.
