A: Hi Dave1500 and thank you for your interest in the Air Step Foot Pump. There is no valve to close on the pump itself. There are 2 ports. One for inflation and one for deflation and you move the hose to the port that you want to use. It sucks air in through the empty port hole and pushes it out through the hose for inflation. If you move the hose to the deflation port it sucks the air in through the hose (which is connected to the item you’re deflating), and pulls the air out and expels it through the empty port hole.

A: Air bed pumps are more about high volume, low pressure (vs. a bike or tire pump which is high pressure, low volume). This pump is rated at 2 PSI and moves 1.4L of air per pump cycle.
