Things to think about when choosing a PFD

Whether you are boating, water skiing or fishing, help to stay safe this summer with a personal flotation device, also called a PFD. There are a wide variety of designs and sizes available—be sure to choose the one that’s right for you.

Find the right fit

For a proper fit and instructions on use, always refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations. For adults, PFD sizing is determined by chest size. It’s important to try the PFD on to ensure it fits properly. You can adjust the straps and buckles so it feels comfortable and secure. It should fit snugly, but not bind or chafe. Sizes vary by brand and model, so it’s always best to try it on to find the right fit for your body type.

Kids’ PFDs

For a proper fit and instructions on use, always refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations. For kids, PFD sizing is determined by their weight. Some kids’ PFDs have head support, and infant PFDs have a crotch strap that helps prevent the PFD from riding up over the infant’s head. Children grow constantly so PFDs should be continually checked for proper fit and necessary adjustments.
