How to protect your shrubs for winter

We aren’t the only ones who require winter jackets.  When fall and winter are upon us, it’s important to protect our shrubs for the cold Canadian temperatures ahead.

4 STEPS

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

STEP 1

Water thoroughly

Make sure your shrub is watered thoroughly before the cold weather sets in. It will freeze over winter and unthaw in Spring providing instant water for the roots.

STEP 2

Tie to trunk

For individual trees or shrubs, tie the leading end of the winter wrap to the trunk below the lowest branch.

STEP 3

Wrap in an upwards spiral

Next, proceed to wrap the tree or shrub in an upward spiral direction, allowing an overlap of the burlap.

STEP 4

Wrap with garden twine

Then, using Garden Twine, overwrap the winter wrap to secure it in place for the remainder of the season.
