What should every boat have on board?
Every boat should have the necessary safety supplies, boat accessories, and boat parts that will keep everyone safe and prepared. The Canadian Small Vessel Regulations have mandated equipment that should be on board a vessel in the country. The following lists include some of the mandatory items, but it is recommended to confirm the full list of marine supplies for a boat of your size.
For crafts over 6 metres:
• Distress signals
• Life jackets and PFDs
• Buoyant heaving line (50’)
• Reboarding device/ladder
• Watertight flashlight
• Bilge pump
• Navigation lights (if boating at night)
For crafts up to 6 metres:
• Life jackets and PFDs for each person on board
• Buoyant heaving line (50’)
• Reboarding device or ladder
Other items you may want to have on board include:
• Throwable floatation devices
• Medical kit
• Anchor and rode
• Basic cleaning supplies
• Anchor with cable, rope or chain
What should I pack for an overnight boat trip?
Apart from having the right equipment on board, you’ll want to ensure you pack provisions and personal care items for an overnight trip on the water. Bring along plenty of water, food, and snacks, a few flashlights for navigation, toiletries, and comfortable clothing.
