What is a basketball system?
A basketball system consists of all the parts of a basketball goal, including the backboard, rim, net, extension arm, and post. They are often considered synonymous with basketball hoops but the term can be used to differentiate between simpler units for younger kids and more professional quality ones for adults and experienced players.
What should I look for when buying a basketball system?
Once you’ve decided where your system will go, consider the three types of hoops available:
· In-ground – In-ground options are fastened to the ground with either cement for a permanent solution or an anchor mount for a less permanent solution.
· Portable – Portable hoops are the most convenient option and have bases with wheels that can be filled with water for stability.
· Mounted – Mounted models are great for limited space and typically feature just a backboard and hoop that can be mounted on a wall or garage.
As well, there are also things like the backboard, rim, poles, and height adjustment to consider:
· Backboard – The material will affect both durability and how the ball bounces off it. While polycarbonate and acrylic are similar, polycarbonate is a more durable option and can withstand the elements well. Tempered glass is commonly used at the pro level.
· Poles – For portable and in-ground hoops, there are square and round poles to choose from. Square poles are better against vibrations and shaking. Plate-mounted options also provide more freedom when it comes to moving the system.
· Height adjustment – Systems that come with adjustment mechanisms are great for younger players that may take some time to grow into using a full-sized hoop.
How do I set up and use a basketball system?
Not all basketball systems require extensive setup. For example, portable basketball systems simply require assembly by following the instructions provided, while in-ground and mounted systems may require a few more steps. For mounted versions, ensure the height of the rim is 10 feet above the ground and is properly mounted with nuts and bolts. For in-ground systems that you want built-in to the ground, dig a hole and secure the pole with poured concrete, and smooth out the top with a trowel.
