Why are they called the Oilers?

Edmonton is known as the oil capital of Canada. The original owner Bill Hunter formerly owned a Junior A team called the Oil Kings, and thus named the hockey team the Edmonton Oilers.

What are the Edmonton Oilers best known for?

The Oilers are best known for signing and originally having one of the greatest ice hockey players ever to play. Nicknamed “the Great One”, Gretzky went on to become the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season and did so four separate times. After his retirement, he held 61 total NHL records, including 40 regular season records, 15 playoff records, and 6 All-Star records.
