What are slingshots useful for?
Slingshots are primarily used for taking small game at shorter ranges. They have long been modernized to become powerful and precise for hunting purposes, made from a combination of metal and moulded plastic and available in a range of styles. Especially during situations where you can’t or don’t want to use a firearm, slingshots can act as a quiet and handy alternative. Some more seasoned hunters even use them when hunting big game to scare off other small species like squirrels or raccoons.
Where are slingshots banned?
The legality of using these tools depends on the province and region you are in. In Ontario, they are legal for small game only, not including waterfowl. In BC and Alberta, however, there are no regulations that prevent hunters from using them. Ensure you have a hunting license when using slingshots in permitted places.
What should I look for when buying a slingshot?
When purchasing a slingshot, consider the overall style, the handle construction, and the elastic material. The three general styles include flat-band, tubular, and circular, where tubular is the most common and powerful.
The elastic portion of the tool is what provides the shot power. There are two types, including flat bands and tube bands. Tubes are ideal for hunting in the wilderness as they are more durable. As you’ll need stability when using it, ensure the tool is made of sturdy materials and has an ergonomic design or features for comfort.
You’ll also want to have slingshot accessories such as ammunition shot balls and replacement bands in case the existing one breaks.
How can I use a slingshot safely?
Before using a slingshot, inspect it for any wear and tear. If deemed sturdy and fit to use, hold the tool horizontally to aim with the fork. Place the pellet in the center of the pouch and hold the elastic with your thumb and index finger. While bending your index finger, keep your thumb straight and pull the elastic back to your cheek. Focus on the target and let go. Hunting eyewear can also act as extra protection from rogue pellets.
