What are hard baits?
Hard baits are made from wood, metal, or plastic materials and are designed to be used in open water where the current is strong. There are many reasons an angler would be naturally inclined to choose hard baits—they are long-lasting with minimum tear, have realistic patterns to replicate schooling baitfish and feature a rattle inside to attract lurking fish. Here are a few hard bait options to choose from:
Crankbaits
Crankbaits are among the top choices of hard fishing lures since they can explore various depths and cover water quickly. They also come in a variety of sizes and shapes.
Spinners
Spinners are one of the easiest hard baits to use, especially in murky water. Their spinning motion creates noise and vibration that hungry fish can pick up on when they roll through the water.
Spoons
Spoons move through the water in a side-toside motion replicating an injured baitfish.
Jigs
Jigs are extremely versatile hard lures that create a jerky, vertical "jumping" motion to attract fish.
How do you rig hard baits?
1. Tie a loop to the end of the main line and attach a hard bait. You'll need to thread the line through the lure and through the loop in the knot.
2. Make three wraps around the line and pass the end through the loop again.
3. Run the end through the new loop and pull tight.
Why use hard baits over soft baits?
One of the advantages of using hard fishing lures is that they are typically more durable than soft baits. They can withstand being chewed on by fish, as well as being dragged through the water. And if maintained well, hard baits can last a long time, saving you money in the long run.
