What does an engine block heater do and how does it work?
An engine block heater warms up the engine block, the motor oil, and other internal fluids. Oil gets thicker when it’s cold, which makes it harder for the engine to start. By using an engine block heater, your car will start up easier without using a lot of energy.
How can I tell if my block engine is still working properly?
You can plug in your block heater and wait an hour, then feel the engine block to see if you notice a difference in the temperature between the block and your vehicle’s other parts. Another way to check is by using a multimeter. The ideal resistance reading should be about 20 to 30 ohms.
How to Install a Block Engine Heater
Here are the steps to a block heater installation job:
· Jack up your vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
· Open your hood and locate an open port in the engine block.
· Coat the heating element with thermal grease. Ensure that you’re wearing gloves while doing this.
· Slide the heating element into the block. Then connect the wiring by plugging it into the heating element.
· Route the cable through the engine compartment and out the front grill. Ensure that the cord is away from hot engine components like the exhaust manifold.
· Once the cord is in the right position, secure it with wire ties.
