How do I remove marks from measuring utensils and pencils?

Erasers can remove pencil marks from most hard surfaces and a quick wipe with a damp cloth can get rid of residues. Lumber crayons are trickier to erase, but can be gently scraped off wood, and the remaining marks sanded out with fine grit sandpaper. Making your mark on a removable surface like masking or painter's tape is another way to keep surfaces clean during and after measuring.
