What are the different types of plumbing pipes and fittings?

Plumbing pipes are typically available as common parts such as straight lengths, elbow joints at various angles, and 3-way straight 'tee' pipes. Plumbing fittings can include caps, tees, plugs, sanitary 'tees' and wye spigots for wastewater, adaptors for connecting one type of pipe to another, quick connect adaptors, couplings, and more.

What materials do plumbing pipe and fittings come in?

Pipes and fittings are typically made of metal or plastics. Galvanized pipes are dipped into zinc to resist rust, while brass, PVC plastic, and ABS plastic are other common and dependable materials for plumbing. PEX pipes are plastic and use metal pipe fittings to make connections, couplings, or tight angles.

How do you tell what size your plumbing pipes are?

Pipe widths are usually given as the inner diameter of the pipe, and it is usually labeled on the pipe itself. Most water supply pipes are 3/4 or 1-inch, while drain and wastewater pipe is wider.
