How to maintain a pool

Is there anything better than a sparkling pool waiting for you in your backyard on a hot day? Keep yours in great shape with regular maintenance.

Since chemicals are required to keep your pool water ready for swimming, the first thing you need to know is what the water volume is in your pool. You can find this in your pool’s instruction manual. Alternatively, you can calculate it using Canadian Tire’s easy online pool water calculator or the CanadianTire Water Lab app.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

STEP 1. Test and balance the water

To ensure that your water is safe for swimming and that your sanitizer is working properly, check the pH level of your pool with a test strip or drop test. Put the results into our pool and spa chemical calculator, or in the Aquarius App to determine which product you need to get a perfect pH balance, based on your pool volume.

STEP 3. Shock your pool

If the weather is very warm or your pool is heavily used, you will also need to shock your pool to remove waste that can’t be filtered out such as sunscreen, rainwater and perspiration.

STEP 5. Add a clarifier

Using clarifier is not required for overall maintenance but can make the water crystal clear and improve filtration. Clarifiers are popular for pools with inpool lighting.

Additional information for residents of Quebec only: The regular annual rate for persons applying for the Triangle Mastercard and the Triangle World Elite Mastercard is 21.99% for cash transactions and related fees and 21.99% for all other charges.
